Risk Map: The Future of Navigation and Risk Mitigation

Navigation has always answered one question: how do I get there? The next layer answers a harder one: what will I face when I do?

Highway at night representing the future of navigation and risk mitigation

Navigation answers one question: which route is fastest? Risk Map answers a harder one: which route, at which time, carrying which vehicle, is safest to drive? Navigation is a routing problem. Risk Map is a risk communication platform — it tells dispatchers, drivers, and insurers about upcoming hazards before a vehicle reaches them, not after an incident has occurred.

A routing engine knows a road is closed. It does not know that the same road becomes critical risk for a high-profile tanker at 7 AM because a crosswind advisory activates at 6:45. A fleet SaaS platform earns $100–$500 per vehicle per year. A single commercial crash costs $200,000 to $3,000,000. The mismatch between who holds the data and who absorbs the financial consequence is the opening for a new category.

Navigation tells you where the road goes. Risk Map tells you what the road will be when you get there.

The Three-Variable Problem

Trajectory risk requires solving three variables simultaneously — and keeping them synchronised as conditions change in real time.

01

Where will the vehicle be?

The planned route decomposed into a time-ordered sequence of road segments. Derived from TMS data, updated continuously from telemetry. Not just the destination — every intermediate segment and the expected arrival time at each.

02

When will it be there?

ETA at each segment, not just the destination. Machine learning models integrating traffic patterns, driver behavior, weather-induced speed changes, and dispatch dynamics. A 20-minute ETA shift can move a vehicle out of a hazard window entirely — or into one.

03

What hazards will exist at that time?

Active and forecast hazard conditions at 200–500 meter resolution, time-indexed to the ETA at each segment. Not current conditions — conditions at the moment of arrival. Crosswinds, ice formation, fog banks, construction exposure, flood-prone segments, structural vulnerabilities.

How the System Flows

Five stages, running continuously — re-triggered on every route change, position update, or forecast revision.

New Revenue

Risk intelligence-as-a-service

The pipeline re-runs on every route change, position update, or forecast revision — continuously, not on a schedule.

The Risk Formula

The core computation collapses to a clean formula, though the data infrastructure behind each variable is substantial:

The Risk Map Computation

Risk(segment, t) = Intersection(
  HazardField(segment, t),
  VehicleTrajectory(segment, ETA),
  Vulnerability(vehicle, cargo)
)

HazardField

Active and forecast risk conditions at segment level, time-indexed to vehicle ETA.

VehicleTrajectory

Planned route decomposed into timed road segments from TMS and telemetry feeds.

Vulnerability

Vehicle-specific amplification: type, cargo class, axle configuration, driver familiarity.

The vulnerability multiplier is what separates Risk Map from generic weather overlays. The same crosswind event is a moderate advisory for a loaded box truck and a critical alert for a high-profile tanker. Vehicle-specific scoring means alerts are rare, high-confidence, and acted on — not background noise dispatchers learn to ignore.

Where the Value Lands

Fleet SaaS companies hold the route data but have no economic incentive to build trajectory risk intelligence. Insurers do.

Where the Value Lands

Fleet SaaS Provider

Revenue per vehicle per year$100 – $500
Cost of a prevented crash$0 (not their liability)
Incentive to invest in risk predictionLow

Commercial Insurer

Cost per commercial crash event$200k – $3M+
Value of a prevented crashDirect payout avoided
Incentive to invest in risk predictionVery high

The data lives inside fleet systems. The economic consequence lives inside insurance carriers. Risk Map closes that gap.

Risk Communication, Not Risk Analysis

Risk Map is prospective. It does not analyze past losses. It communicates upcoming exposure — in real time, to the people who can still prevent it.

The Communication Distinction

Ex-Post Risk Analysis

Traditional telematics and loss modeling

  • — Incident occurred; GPS trace pulled
  • — Driver score updated post-trip
  • — Loss event reported to insurer
  • — Actuarial model updated at renewal
  • — Intervention window: zero

Prospective Risk Communication

Trajectory Intelligence via Risk Map

  • → Route planned; risk surface evaluated
  • → Hazard intersection forecast hours ahead
  • → Alert delivered before departure or en route
  • → Insurer notified of elevated exposure in advance
  • → Intervention window: hours

Retrospective telematics prices the next policy. Prospective risk communication prevents the next claim. Only one of them can act on the loss event scheduled to happen in four hours on I-80.

Why Insurers Are the Natural First Buyers

Commercial vehicle insurance is a $300 billion global market. Fleet SaaS is $10 billion. Risk Map positions as an intelligence layer for underwriters and loss prevention teams — competing for a share of a market thirty times larger than the one its data originates from. Four value mechanisms drive the case:

Loss Prevention

Reroute recommendations, departure time adjustments, segment avoidance — delivered hours before the vehicle arrives. Every prevented loss is a direct reduction in claims paid.

Dynamic Underwriting

A fleet on mountain routes in winter carries different risk than the same fleet in summer. Real-time exposure signals enable pricing that reflects actual risk, not annual averages.

Actuarial Primitives

Each trajectory-hazard intersection — whether a loss occurs or not — is a structured data point: route-level, time-indexed, vehicle-specific. The most granular actuarial dataset in commercial vehicle insurance.

Claims Defense

When a loss occurs, the trajectory risk record provides documentary evidence: forecast state, alert status, dispatcher response. A structured incident timeline, built automatically.

The road already contains the hazard. The fleet already holds the route. The insurer already carries the cost. The only missing piece has been the system that connects all three — before the vehicle arrives.
